Computer-assisted
coding is the creation of codes used to answer using the computer to search for
possible answers based on some search text. This software is used to analyze
documents in healthcare and produces appropriate medical codes for specific
phrases within the document. Computer-assisted coding is software created to
streamline coding, and reduce the backlog, thus increasing productivity and helping
coders navigate easily and extensively in complex situations quickly. The
technology is a type of Artificial intelligence. On the other hand Alone coding
is coding created entirely independent of and neither contains or incorporates,
nor constitutes a derivative based on part of application software or any other
ownership.
Similarities
Ø Alone
coding and assisted coding are both developed to solve challenges appropriate
for a specific need.
Ø They
both increase productivity, accuracy, and return on investment.
Differences
Ø Assisted
coding can be a difficult process in the implementation stages, as modern
software can be complex and staff has to change their coding practices and
learn the new ones, thus requiring commitment and engagement, and training.
Ø On
the hand Alone coding does not typically require staff to change their coding
practices and fits seamlessly on the existing coding, thus requiring less or no
training of staff.
Ø Assisted
coding struggles with accuracy especially when phrases are turned into
incorrect code suggestions and create less precision, especially in healthcare
systems where a proper diagnosis is required.
Ø Alone
coding is able to interpret better and create a more comprehensive report,
especially in patients.
Ø Assisted
coding depends more on a human coder because the codes must be validated by a
human coder, while in Alone coding solutions are built to work with fewer human
coders.
Computer Assisted coding can be helpful
and advantageous to an organization, by improving productivity, it is important
to note that regular checks and balances are crucial and monitoring and
training of staff.
